U.S., 1998, 118 min, 35mm, Dir. Terry Gilliam, Rated R for pervasive drug use throughout, strong language, and brief nudity, Universal Pictures
"The strongest magnet in this psychedelic morass is Johnny Depp who, as the story's antic, disgusting and seductive spirit guide, is impossible to look away from." - Washington Post
The Gables Cinema and the Secret Celluloid Society present Director Terry Gilliam’s 1998 adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson’s psychedelic road trip, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, on spectacular 35mm as part of the midnight After Hours series. Rogue journalist, Raoul Duke (Johnny Depp), and his psychotic attorney, Dr. Gonzo (Benicio Del Toro), are assigned to cover a motorcycle race in Las Vegas. Like any serious professionals, they fill the trunk of their red convertible with marijuana and assorted other drugs. Between mind-bending hallucinations and extreme paranoia, this otherwise simple assignment gets complicated. A fine ensemble cast, starring Johnny Depp, Benicio Del Toro and Tobey Maguire gives Fear and Loathing gravitas. Stephen Holden of the New York Times writes, “The closest sensory approximation of an acid trip ever achieved by a mainstream movie and the latest example of Mr. Gilliam's visual bravura.”
