"What a moveable feast of delights." – Joe Morgenstern, Wall Street Journal
Master animator Hayao Miyazaki's exquisitely illustrated visual spectacle, Howl's Moving Castle, screens at the Gables Cinema as part of our children and family program Family Day on Aragon! 18-year-old Sophie (voiced by Emily Mortimer) is cursed by the Witch of the Waste, turning her into an old hag. Sophie flees to the countryside where a mystical moving castle roams the hills. The castle is inhabited by the notorious wizard Howl (voiced by Christian Bale) and the fire demon who powers the castle, Calcifer, both of whom can see the real Sophie under the curse. The richly inventive Howl’s Moving Castle was nominated for Best Animated Feature during the 2006 Academy Awards. Michael Atkinson of the Village Voice writes, “An organic, childlike wonder, fabulously unpredictable and seethingly inventive.” This film is appropriate for ages 8 and up.
