U.S., 2004, 136 min, 35mm, Dir. Quentin Tarantino, Rated R, Park Circus
“Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill, Volume 2 is an exuberant celebration of moviemaking, coasting with heedless joy from one audacious chapter to another, working as irony, working as satire, working as drama, working as pure action.” – Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times
The Bride returns to finish the bloody job she started in Kill Bill: Volume 2. This time, Tarantino takes a step back from the high-octane action to build on the world and characters he and Uma Thurman created. Flashbacks show us the life the Bride led just before the carnage at the church as well as her intensive, painful and often humiliating training she suffered at the hands of Pai Mei (famous martial arts actor Gordon Liu in an homage to the classic Chinese master). But don’t get complacent with this contemplative mood, because there are still geysers of blood waiting to be shot out as three of the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad still live: the dangerous Elle, duplicitous Budd, and mastermind Bill. It’s time to finish this cold dish.
