U.S., 2004, 119 min, 35mm, Dir. Wes Anderson, Rated R, Buena Vista Pictures
"The director magically conjures emotional dividends in the film's invigorating last moments, which wordlessly celebrate an underrated and truly Andersonian virtue: solidarity." – Time Out
The internationally famous oceanographer Steve Zissou (Bill Murray) is on a grand expedition to eradicate the “jaguar shark” that killed his beloved work partner, Esteban. Wes Anderson’s fourth film, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, is an eccentric homage to Jacques-Yves Cousteau, French naval officer and oceanographer, featuring Seu Jorge's Portuguese-language Bowie covers, 16mm claymation underwater footage, and the largest set Anderson has had to date (the Belafonte). Along with Murray, Team Zissou has an all-star cast featuring Owen Wilson, Jeff Goldblum, Cate Blanchett, Willem Dafoe, and Anjelica Huston. The Life Aquatic also marks the first collaboration between Anderson and Roman Coppola, who served as the film’s second unit director. Peter Travers of Rolling Stone notes, “Anderson holds steady to the delicate emotions that run beneath this stormy comedy of betrayal, death and forgiveness.”
