"Like East of Eden replayed as a hyperbolic rock fever." - Entertainment Weekly
The Gables Cinema and the Secret Celluloid Society present Dir. Albert Magnoli’s 1984 rock 'n' roll classic musical drama Purple Rain on awesome 35mm as part of our After Hours series on Saturday, January 16 at 11:30 pm! The Kid (Prince) leads the band The Revolution in Minneapolis, which headlines along with their rival band The Time led by Morris (Morris Day). The Kid’s jealous and violent behavior toward band members and singer Apollonia (Apollonia Kotero) is wrecking the band and any hope The Kid can keep Morris from approaching Apollonia away as a romantic partner. When he is finally able to see how toxic his actions are, his liberation allows him to give the rock 'n' roll performance of a lifetime. The film's score deservedly won an Academy Award and a Grammy. About Prince’s first starring role, Cynthia Kirk of Variety writes, “Playing a character rooted in his own background, and surrounded by the real-life members of his Minneapolis-based musical ‘family,’ rock star Prince makes an impressive feature film debut... a rousing contemporary addition to the classic backstage musical genre.”
