U.S., 1983, 170 min, 35mm, Dir. Brian De Palma, Rated R for strong language and graphic violence, drug use and sexuality
"A grandiose modern morality play, excessive, broad and operatic at times.” - Variety
The Gable Cinema and the Secret Celluloid Society present the 1983 Brian De Palma tour de force, Scarface, on 35mm as part of our late-night After Hours series! The film begins with Tony Montana (Oscar award-winner Al Pacino) and his friend Manny Ribera (Steven Bauer) leaving Cuba and entering Miami as refugees. In exchange for some serious criminal acts, Montana and Ribera are permitted to leave the refugee camp. After a brief attempt at legitimate wages, they resort to selling cocaine to major dealers around the world. Their graphically violent criminal enterprise quickly grows, as does Tony’s insatiable appetite for drugs, money, power, and the woman he can’t have. Roger Ebert notes, “Scarface is one of those special movies, like The Godfather, that is willing to take a flawed, evil man and allow him to be human.”
