U.S., 2004, 123 min, 35mm, Dir. Alexander Payne, Rated R, Fox Searchlight Pictures
"A boisterous, brilliant, heart-warming comedy--strikes me as just about perfect." - Chicago Tribune
Alexander Payne’s Sideways is a boozy road trip film about two middle-aged men, one an English teacher/unsuccessful writer (Paul Giamatti) and the other a washed up actor (Thomas Haden Church) who is about to walk down the aisle. The week-long travel into California’s wine country between two close friends is a bachelor party in the most traditional sense, surrounding themselves with women and wine. The escapade is not only comical, but bittersweet, an attempt to delay the future and ultimately their age. An adaptation from Rex Pickett’s novel of the same earned writer/director Alexander Payne’s first Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, and for four other nominations including Best Picture in 2004. Kenneth Turan of Los Angeles Times exclaims, “Exactly written, directed with a surgeon's precision and transcendently acted, Sideways brings emotional reality to a consistently amusing character comedy, making it something to be cherished like the delicate Santa Ynez Valley wines that are the story's vivid backdrop.”
