It is present day, and Duke (James Garner) reads a love story from a notebook to nursing home Alzheimer’s patient (Gena Rowlands). The story recedes back to the 1940’s tell the tale of affluent 17-year-old Allie (Rachel McAdams) who meets working-class boy Noah (Ryan Gosling). Over the course of their summer together, Allie and Noah fall deeply in love. However her parent's disapproval, World War II and growing social differences cause a constant wedge between them. Technically exceptional while featuring engrossing and compelling performances from each actor, Critic Joe Morgenstern of the Wall Street Journal remakes that The Notebook is, “A lovely surprise.
