"The Thing is a peerless masterpiece of relentless suspense, retina-wrecking visual excess and outright, nihilistic terror." - Empire Magazine
The Gables Cinema and the Secret Celluloid Society present John Carpenter’s The Thing, the first film in our special Halloween Up All Nite celebration during our After Hours series on 35mm! With writers Bill Lancaster and John W. Campbell Jr., Carpenter's sci-fi horror cult classic follows the story of a group of American scientists exploring Antarctica. When the group stumbles upon an abandoned dog, they learn the animal is able to mutate into other life forms, including humans, and it only gets worse. This alien life-form possesses a maniacal thirst for killing and can replicate the appearance of anyone, taking doubt and suspicion among the team members to extreme heights. Helicopter pilot J.R. MacReady (Kurt Russell) does his best to save the men in this 1980’s Carpenter classic.
