“A good-looking, sharp-edged, entertaining, exciting space opera.” – Roger Ebert
How anyone thought they could make a sequel to Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey is beyond us yet here we are. But as Roger Ebert says, director Peter Hyams’ follow-up is a good movie. Set nine years after the failure of Discovery One’s mission and astronaut David Bowman’s (Keir Dullea) disappearance, 2010 follows a new joint U.S.-Soviet mission to Jupiter. Led by Heywood Floyd (a recast Roy Scheider), this expedition seeks answers to the mysteries of the original film’s ending. In addition to Scheider, the film features a wicked cast that includes John Lithgow, Helen Mirren, and Bob Balaban. It was adapted from Arthur C. Clarke’s novel 2010: Odyssey Two, which was actually a sequel to Kubrick’s film and not Clarke’s own novel.
