Almost Famous
Saturday, 7/14
“The film shimmers with the irresistible pleasures that define Hollywood at its best – it’s polished like glass, funny, knowing and bright, and filled with characters whose lives are invariably sexier and more purposeful than our own.” – Manohla Darhis, L.A. Weekly
Cameron Crowe’s own teenage experiences are the basis for his follow-up to Jerry Maguire, Almost Famous, which features a star-studded cast that includes Frances McDormand, Kate Hudson, Billy Crudup, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Zooey Deschanel. Young, sheltered William Miller (Patrick Fugit) aspires to be a rock journalist, much to the chagrin of his overprotective mother (McDormand). When he fails to interview Black Sabbath on assignment from famous rock critic Lester Bangs (Hoffman), William pens an article about small-time band Stillwater that gets the attention of Rolling Stone magazine. What ensues is warm-hearted coming-of-age narrative through the world of rock ‘n’ roll as William falls in love, meets his heroes, and learns how to fulfill his dreams.
