Amnesia

Friday, 8/11 through Thursday, 8/17

"Barbet Schroeder's cinematic valentine to his German expat mother." – Scott Foundas, Variety

When Jo comes to Ibiza to be a DJ at the club Amnesia, he befriends Martha (Marthe Keller in a career-capping performance) a solitary woman who's trying to forget her past. As their friendship deepens into intimacy, Martha puts everything she has lived by into question. Director Barbet Schroeder is an indispensable figure in world cinema, as producer of films as varied as Eric Rohmer's Six Moral Tales and Nestor Almendros' Conducta Impropia; and as director of Oscar-nominated films such as Barfly and Reversal of Fortune. His new opus is a meditation on Germany's responsibility for its past. How does one protest one of the most unspeakably terrible events in human history, especially when one's compatriots were active participants in the atrocity? The building blocks of Jo's electronic music are like the shards of the life Martha has discarded. Amnesia is a haunting masterwork where willful loss of memory is a symptom of denial.

Tickets to these screenings are $12.75 and under. Cinema members pay only $8.
