U.S., 2019, 98 min, 2K DCP, Dir. Hannah Pearl Utt, Not Rated, Greenwich Entertainment
“Hannah Pearl Utt and Jen Tullock have a chemistry that you want to see in more films, especially if they’re like Before You Know It.“ – Nick Allen, RogerEbert.com
“The kind of indie offering that doesn’t always work anymore, but this strange family comedy is an amusing exception.” – Kate Erbland, IndieWire
Hannah Pearl Utt writes, directs and stars in her feature debut as Rachel, a stage manager who lives in an apartment above the struggling Greenwich VIllage theater she runs with her family. Also crammed into the brownstone are her has-been playwright father (Mandy Patinkin), her off-kilter actress sister (played by co-writer Jen Tullock) and a deadpan preteen niece. The levelheaded Rachel is the glue holding things together. In the wake of a sudden tragedy, she and her sister learn their presumed-deceased mother is actually alive and thriving as a soap opera star. Equal parts madcap comedy, adult coming-of-age story and poignant drama, Before You Know It gleefully defies categorization, and that is its genius.
