Boogie Nights
Saturday, 2/10
"Perhaps the most exciting thing about Boogie Nights is the ease with which writer-director Anderson ... spins out this complex web. A true storyteller, able to easily mix and match moods in a playful and audacious manner." – Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times
In 1977 San Fernando Valley, Eddie Adams (Mark Wahlberg) would have been just another high school dropout had he not met highly successful porn director Jack Horner (Burt Reynolds) and actress Amber Waves (Julianne Moore) in a restaurant where he busses tables. Propelled into the dark world as alter-ego Dirk Diggler, Eddie has a meteoric rise to the top of his profession and all the trappings and temptations that come with it. Boogie Nights features colorful and sympathetic characters (made up of a stellar cast that also includes Heather Graham, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Don Cheadle, John C. Reilly, William H. Macy, and many more), Scorsese-inspired sweeping camera and tracking shots, and a demystified perspective on sex. The film cemented director Paul Thomas Anderson as one of the brightest auteurs of his generation.
