Dirty Dancing
Saturday, 2/15
“Dirty Dancing—what a great title!—is such a bubbleheaded, retro vision of growing up in the sixties (or any other time) that you go out of the theatre giggling happily.” – Pauline Kael, The New Yorker
Dance movies were never the same after the world witnessed Baby and Johnny’s electrifying “dirty” dancing back in 1987. A love story for the ages about a young woman who falls in love with her dance instructor, Dirty Dancing was a box office sensation no doubt in part to its elaborate choreography, catchy tunes (“(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” won the Oscar for Best Original Song), and – let’s not kid ourselves – a shirtless Patrick Swayze. Its fluffy exterior belies a poignant tale about women’s rights so it’s no surprise that the empowering film is a hit with female audiences of all ages. So grab your maracas and get out of that corner because now’s the time for some dirty dancing.
