Embrace of the Serpent centers on the story of Karamakate, an Amazonian shaman and the last survivor of his people, and the two Western scientists who, over the course of 40 years, build a friendship with him as they search the jungle for an elusive plant with miraculous healing properties. The film was inspired by the real-life journals of two explorers who traveled through the Colombian Amazon during in search of the sacred and difficult-to-find psychedelic Yakruna plant.

Director Ciro Guerra shot Embrace of the Serpent on 35mm film in an unforgiving rainforest adjacent to the mighty Amazon River, a feat that might have seemed impossible to all but the fearless German auteur Werner Herzog (Fitzcarraldo). In a way, those grueling conditions reflect the state of Colombia itself, a country rocked by years of violent conflict that has only recently moved toward peace. Upon its release, this film stunned audiences around the world, garnering the country its first Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film and becoming Colombia's highest-grossing film of all time.

In addition to our new releases, be sure to join us for these special limited, or one-time-only, screenings.
