Fiddler on the Roof

Tuesday, 8/17

“A great film ... great in the way that matters most — greatly moving, an extraordinarily powerful, emotional experience.” —Gary Arnold, Washington Post

Director Norman Jewison masterfully brought the massively popular Broadway musical about Tevye, his five unmarried daughters, and the struggle between tradition and change to the big screen in 1971. As the Czar initiates a violent pogrom in Ukraine, Tevye (played by Topo) and his wife Golde (Norma Crane) enlist the help of village matchmaker Yente (Molly Picon) in finding suitable husbands for the three eldest daughters. Featuring a number of earworms, including "Tradition", "Matchmaker, Matchmaker," and "If I Were a Rich Man," Fiddler on the Roof is a classic through and through that won Academy Awards for Best Cinematography, Best Sound, and Best Score (John Williams' very first Oscar).
