John Wick mourns the loss of his wife to a terminal illness but a gift from beyond the grave in the form of an adorable beagle puppy puts the stoic and brooding man on the path to recovery – until a troupe of Russian gangsters break into his home, savagely beat him, and (their worst mistake) kill his dog. Cue one of this decade’s most stylish and adrenaline-pumping revenge tales courtesy of veteran stunt coordinators Chad Stahelski and David Leitch. The two created a unique piece of action filmmaking; a swirl of captivating choreography, luscious lighting, and powerful punches. Their influences are clear, spanning from anime and westerns to John Woo and Jean-Pierre Melville, but never overbearing, feeling like a wholly original journey led by the always entrancing Keanu Reeves.
