L'innocente
“One of Visconti’s most erotic pictures.” – Jonathan Rosenbaum, Chicago Reader
“Among the most beautiful and severely disciplined films he has ever made. A film of effortless command in which the director’s presence is everywhere felt — and nowhere intrudes.” – Vincent Canby, The New York Times
In his final film, Luchino Visconti offers one of his most incisive variations on the moral decay of the aristocracy. Based on a novel by proto-fascist sensualist Gabriele d’Annunzio, this melodrama concerns a self-absorbed nobleman (Giancarlo Giannini) whose “liberal” views on marriage extend only as far as his own marital affairs. When his tormented wife (Laura Antonelli) pursues a dalliance with a writer, his chauvinism is unleashed. Visconti returns one last time to the luxuriant, red velvet world of the 19th century with a supremely controlled emotional intensity.
