Lu Over the Wall

Saturday, 5/18

“Yuasa's bold imagery and sometimes convoluted storytelling defy the conventions of traditional animated filmmaking, but he is clearly an artist with an individual vision whose work offers something genuinely new and eye-catching.” – Charles Solomon, Los Angeles Times

Winner of the Grand Prize at the prestigious Annecy Animation Festival and an official selection of Sundance 2018, Lu Over the Wall is a toe-tapping, feel-good demonstration of anime auteur Masaaki Yuasa’s (Mind Game, The Night is Short, Walk on Girl, and Devilman Crybaby) genre-mixing mastery that will leave you humming long after you leave the theater. Kai is a talented but adrift musician who joins his classmates’ middle-school rock band as keyboardist. Their practice sessions bring an unexpected guest: Lu, a young mermaid whose fins turn to feet when she hears the beats, and whose singing causes humans to compulsively dance – whether they want to or not. While Kai forms a bond with Lu, ancient beliefs in the village sow distrust between the residents and the mermaid – whom they believe is a sign of impending doom.

Please note that while we are using an English-language trailer, the film will be shown in the original Japanese with English subtitles.
