Moonrise Kingdom

Friday, 3/30 to Sunday, 4/1

"Another sprightly confection of oddities, attractively eccentric, witty and strangely clothed.” – Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian

Set on an island off the coast of New England in the summer of 1965, Moonrise Kingdom tells the story of 12-year-olds Sam and Suzy (Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward) who fall in love, make a secret pact, and run away together into the wilderness. As various authorities hunt them down, a violent storm brews off-shore threatening to turn the peaceful island community on its head in every which way. Featuring a cast that includes Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Bill Murray, and Frances McDormand, Moonrise Kingdom is a stirring adventure about adolescent love, the lure of adulthood, and the innocence of youth. As Manohla Dargis said for The New York Times, “[The film] breezes along with a beautifully coordinated admixture of droll humor, deadpan and slapstick.”

A stop-motion adaptation of a children's novel; a whodunnit spanning multiple decades; a love story between young teens longing to be adults. Since 1996, Wes Anderson has proved to be a unique voice in the cinematic landscape, concocting serio-comic stories full of wit, wonder, and whimsy. In anticipation of Anderson's latest film, Isle of Dogs, CGAC presents five of the director's best works to date.
