Hayao Miyazaki's first feature film in 10 years. A young boy named Mahito, yearning for his mother, ventures into a world shared by the living and the dead. There, death comes to an end, and life finds a new beginning. The Boy and the Heron is a hand-drawn, original story written and directed by Miyazaki. Produced by Studio Ghibli co-founder Toshio Suzuki, the film features a musical score from long-time collaborator Joe Hisaishi.

Miyazaki co-founded Studio Ghibli in 1985 with Isao Takahata, and the pair went on to make some of the most beloved, influential, and critically acclaimed animated movies of all time. His 2001 film Spirited Away broke box office records in Japan, and won the Golden Bear at the 2002 Berlin International Film Festival as well as the 2002 Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. In 2014, the Board of Governors for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences presented him with an honorary Oscar for Lifetime Achievement.
