The Royal Tenenbaums

Monday, 4/2 to Wednesday, 4/4

"Each character, as ever, is tucked into a shell of his or her obsessions, and yet the filming itself -- the grace of Anderson's draftsmanship, as it were -- binds the figures together into a team." – Anthony Lane, New Yorker

With The Royal Tenenbaums, indie darling Wes Anderson solidified his status as one of the preeminent directors of American cinema in the new millennium. Featuring a sprawling cast that includes Luke Wilson, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ben Stiller, Angelica Houston, Owen Wilson, Bill Murray, Danny Glover , and of course Gene Hackman, the film perfectly balanced Anderson's signature dry wit with moments of sorrow and pathos in this saga of a polymath family. When the distant patriarch of the family, Royal (Hackman in one of his last major roles), calls together his genius children to announce his impending death, the family goes on a journey of rediscovery as they return to their childhood home. Roger Ebert praised the film’s writing, noting his belief that the film was “proof that Anderson and his writing partner, the actor Owen Wilson, have a gift of cockeyed genius.”

A stop-motion adaptation of a children's novel; a whodunnit spanning multiple decades; a love story between young teens longing to be adults. Since 1996, Wes Anderson has proved to be a unique voice in the cinematic landscape, concocting serio-comic stories full of wit, wonder, and whimsy. In anticipation of Anderson's latest film, Isle of Dogs, CGAC presents five of the director's best works to date.
