"West Side Story is classic Spielberg, classic moviemaking—just classic, period." —David Fear, Rolling Stone

"There’s so much beauty in this West Side Story. It merges things that have truly shaped pop culture…" —Brian Tallerico, RogerEbert.com

Academy Award winner Steven Spielberg directs this new adaptation of the popular original stage musical West Side Story. Inspired by William Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers in Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story tells the classic tale of fierce rivalries and young love in 1957 New York City. Two opposing gangs, the Sharks and the Jets, from two very different backgrounds clash on the streets of the city that never sleeps. Even though seemingly irreconcilable hostilities abound, love still finds its way in as former Jet, Tony, falls in love with Maria, whose family loyalty is with the Sharks.

West Side Story has been adapted for the screen from the original 1957 Broadway show, with book by Arthur Laurents, music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and concept, direction and choreography by Jerome Robbins. The film received seven Academy Award nominations in 2022, including Best Picture and Best Director.
